About

JUROS's mission is simple: Docendo discimus, or, "We learn by teaching".

The JUROS staff is committed to establishing a forum for the discussion of scholarly undergraduate work from every area of study at Ohio State. By developing such a forum, we can encourage students to learn from and teach each other.

Focus and Scope

The Journal of Undergraduate Research at Ohio State, or JUROS, is an online peer-reviewed publication dedicated to publishing research conducted by OSU undergraduate students across all disciplines.

Ethical Considerations

All submitted research must adhere to ethical guidelines. Any research involving the use of human subjects must be approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and any research involving animal subjects must be approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), as stated in the methods section. If JUROS finds that the research violates ethical guidelines, they may refuse the paper solely on this basis without consideration of other factors.

General Copyright Restrictions

This Author Agreement for JUROS ("Agreement") is entered into by and between The Ohio State University, on behalf of its University Libraries ("Publisher") and the author ("Author").

For good and valuable consideration, Publisher and Author agree as follows:

1. Author hereby grants to Publisher the right to publish, reproduce, distribute, translate, transmit and display his/her submitted work and an abstract thereof ("Work") in JUROS in whole or in part and in all formats and all media. as well as to ensure accessibility of works under University policy and current web accessibility standards. Author also hereby grants to Publisher the right for Publisher to enter into agreements with third parties that grant such third parties any or all of the rights that Author has granted to Publisher herein. The aforementioned rights may include the rights necessary to index and abstract the Work. The Author agrees that any subsequent publication of the Work will credit JUROS as the site of first publication and provide a link to JUROS. This Agreement is subject to the terms and expectations outlined on Publisher's website (http://go.osu.edu/publishing-services).

2. Author represents and warrants that: (1) they are the creator and rights holder of the Work; (2) Publisher's exercise of the rights granted to Publisher herein will not infringe or violate any copyright or any other right of a third party; (3) if the Work contains any third party content, they have obtained the unrestricted permission of the copyright owner or that use of third party material is allowed because the material is in the public domain or an appropriate fair use analysis has been performed and there is a reasonable belief that use is permitted and (4) the Work contains nothing libelous or otherwise unlawful. Author hereby agrees to indemnify and hold harmless Publisher and its trustees, officers, employees, agents, and subgrantees from all claims related to Publisher's exercise of the rights granted to Publisher herein or related to the subject matter covered in Author's representations and warranties.

Peer Review

All submissions undergo review by a trained manuscript editor. The manuscript editor and author may work together during the review process to answer any questions and to improve the manuscript. The manuscript editor will provide a preliminary publication decision, and will alert the author of any changes that need to be made. Following the preliminary review, each submission will go through at least two rounds of double-blind peer reviews by trained manuscript editors. At this stage, the Editor-in-Chief will be alerted regarding any errors or edits that need to be addressed, and the Editor-in-Chief will contact the authors directly.

JUROS does not follow the traditional double-blind peer review system common to most journals because JUROS seeks to provide both a publication and a learning experience for all authors, many of whom are attempting to publish for the first time. However, if an author wishes to undergo a traditional double-blind peer review and forego the traditional interaction with a manuscript editor, the author may request this.

All JUROS staff members who would like to submit a manuscript will undergo a double-blind peer review in order to prevent conflicts of interest. The editing process in all double-blind peer reviews will be coordinated by the Editor-in-Chief or the Assistant Editor-in-Chief.

Publication Cycle

JUROS is published on an annual schedule.  Submissions are received during the course of the year and, if accepted, published at the end of the academic year when the peer-review process is complete.  Once per year, a print edition is published, which features works submitted by the print deadline. The items in the print edition are also published online.
