Author Guidelines

I. What can be submitted to JUROS?

a. Independent research projects (for which the student may or may not have received academic credit). Research projects which are part of a larger project are accepted, but the author must have a portion of the research that was mostly conducted independently.
b. Projects that are presented at the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum or other University forum. 
c. Course papers that emphasize original research. 
d. Research and creative projects including fine arts pieces and performances, films, and other media.

II. Who can submit?

a. A current degree-seeking undergraduate student at OSU or recent graduates (within 1 year of date of submission to JUROS). All majors and fields of study welcome.
b. Full eligibility guidelines are in the Author Agreement form.

III. How to Submit 

a. Review the JUROS Author Guidelines before submitting.
b. Register for a JUROS account at juros.osu.edu/user/register. (Refer to the instructional video on the home page)
c. Start a new submission and choose a section to submit your work to (Abstracts, Features, Science & Technology manuscripts, or Arts & Humanities manuscripts).
d. Submit your abstract/feature/manuscript as a Word document (.doc or .docx).  All submissions must have a cover sheet.
e. Add information about any co-authors for this submission. 
f. All figures, tables, charts, graphs, and equations need to be submitted as one supplementary file. Compile all figures, etc. into a Word document, with proper numbering and captions. 
g. Attach the completed author agreement form as a supplementary file (Word or PDF). The primary author, all co-authors, and the research advisor need to sign the author agreement form before the work is submitted.
h. Enter your title and an abstract (required; author’s submitting abstracts for publication can enter a duplicate copy of the abstract here).
i. You should receive an e-mail confirming your submission. If you do not receive this e-mail, please contact the Editors-in-Chief at juros@osu.edu.

IV. Formatting Guidelines | NOTE: JUROS is flexible with citation formatting; you are able to use the style which is standard in your discipline.

a. Cover Sheet(centered in the middle of the page); required for all submissions

i. Abstract/feature/manuscript title
ii. Author name(s) and major(s) (faculty, graduate students, post-docs or staff can be listed as co-authors, but the primary and submitting author MUST be the undergraduate student)
iii. Mailing address, phone number, e-mail address of primary author
iv. Research advisor’s name, department/organization, and email address (include mailing address, if outside of OSU)
v. Date of submission

b. Abstract Guidelines

i. Not to exceed 400 words
ii. Include a cover sheet
iii. Submit as Word document (.doc or .docx)

c. Feature Guidelines

i. Formatting
  1. 2-6 pages, double-spaced (not including citations), with page numbers and 1” margins 
  2. Include a cover sheet 
  3. Submit as Word document (.doc or .docx)
ii. Content
  1. Short, narrative description of research project 
  2. Can include personal experiences with research beyond just findings in the project.
  3. Written for a general audience without too much technical language or jargon  
  4. If including figures, tables, or graphs, see guidelines for formatting and submitting these under Manuscript Guidelines 
  5. Bibliography/works cited (see instructions in Manuscript Guidelines)

d. Manuscript Guidelines

i. Formatting
  1. 6-35 pages, double-spaced, 1” margins, with page numbers
  2. Include a cover sheet 
  3. Submit as Word document (.doc or .docx) 
ii. Content
  1. Abstract that clearly summarizes the author’s research and conclusions, not exceeding 200 words (note: shorter abstract than submitting an abstract only). 
  2. Introduction that explains the context of the research and any specific or technical terms used. 
  3. Methods which explain how the research was conducted 
  4. Results that were found. 
  5. Conclusion that summarizes and includes implications of the research and suggestions for future research 
  6. Acknowledgements that credit persons or organizations that provided outside help (including funding, grants, and fellowships), not exceeding 100 words. 
iii. Figures and Tables
  1. All figures, tables, charts, graphs, and illustrations should be compiled into a separate Word document from the manuscript text and submitted as a supplementary file--they should not be inserted in the manuscript text. Equations can be inserted in-text, but a JPEG, GIF, TIF or PNG copy of the equation should be included with the supplementary file containing all figures.  
  2. Figures, graphs, charts, tables, and equations should be numbered as they appear in the text. Each figure should include a caption that allows the reader to understand the figure without having to find an explanation in the manuscript text.  
  3. Images can be in color or black and white. They must be in JPEG, GIF, TIF or PNG format. All images should be the highest quality possible. 
  4. Images will be re-sized when the layout for online publication is completed. The layout editor can change the size, or you can submit correctly sized photos to ensure the best readability for publication. Sizes are 3.67” wide by any height or 7.5” wide by any height. 
iv. In-Text Citations and Works Cited Page
  1. In-text citation style and works cited/bibliography pages can be in the style which is most common or standard in your field. MLA, APA, and any discipline-specific styles are acceptable (ask your advisor). 
  2. In-text citations or reference should not be formatted as footnotes.
